#SnowdentoOslo campaign launched to bring Edward Snowden to Norway

RootsAction, Norwegian PEN and Networkers South-North are launching a campaign and petition at 4pm local time today in support of bringing Edward Snowden to Norway in order to receive the Ossietzky Prize in November this year. The petition’s initial signatories include Noam Chomsky, Arundhati Roy, Daniel Ellsberg, Marit Arnstad, Jesselyn Radack, Arne Ruth, Ola Larsmo, Coleen Rowley, Thomas Drake, Marsha Coleman-Adebayo, Marjorie Cohn, William Binney, William Nygaard, John Kiriakou, Moddi og Mari Boine.

The move follows a similar attempt to bring Snowden to Norway without threat of extradition last year to accept the Bjornsen prize. After a prolonged negotiation with the Norwegian government, Edward Snowden accepted the award by videolink.

As a result of this attempt, a Freedom of Information request in Norway acquired the most concrete information yet about the attempts to pressure European countries to extradite Edward Snowden to face a political prosecution in the United States. Just this month, the Icelandic government refused a similar request to release correspondence on this issue.

Three years after his revelations began to dramatically alter our understanding of state surveillance, and despite his immediate security being assured as a resident of the Russian Federation, Edward Snowden still cannot travel without the threat of a US extradition request to face an unfair trial under the Espionage Act . He has been prevented from accepting awards in person and from testifying in front of national and international investigations into mass surveillance.

Today’s initiative from Norwegian PEN, RootsAction and Networkers South-North is just the latest in a series of attempts to break this deadlock; public pressure could mean that this is the one that succeeds.
