Edward Snowden wins 2016 Ossietzky Prize

Announced on 7 March 2016

Edward Snowden has been named as the winner of Norwegian PEN’s Ossietzky Prize, awarded annually for “outstanding contributions to freedom of expression.”

The Prize is in the gift of the board of Norwegian PEN who, in announcing their decision, said that “Edward Snowden’s revelations represent one of the most important events in international politics in recent years and a serious crisis of legitimacy in foreign and security policy.”

Norwegian PEN have called for Edward Snowden to be offered refuge in Europe and have stated that they will be making efforts to ensure that Snowden can attend the awards ceremony in November in person.
